As stadiums across Canada erupt in cheers during FIFA, another sound often goes unheard.
The sound of a woman locking herself in a bathroom.
The sound of a child crying in the next room.
The sound of fear.
Major sporting events bring people together. They create moments of celebration, connection, and shared excitement. But behind the celebrations, some women and children may be facing an increased risk of domestic violence at home.
At Nisa Foundation, we believe that conversations about safety must include what happens beyond the stadium, behind closed doors, in homes, and within our communities.
Research has found that reports of domestic violence can increase up to 33% during major football tournaments and sporting events.

While millions of people gather to celebrate the game, some survivors are navigating situations that others may never see.
Domestic violence can include:
Abuse is not always visible. Many survivors suffer silently because they fear what may happen if they speak out.

Some signs that someone may need support include:

Creating safer communities requires all of us.
During FIFA and beyond, we can:
Support and awareness can be life-changing.
At Nisa Foundation, we support women and families affected by domestic violence through compassionate, culturally sensitive services and community support.
While the world watches the action on the field, we must also remember those facing challenges at home.
Because every woman deserves to feel safe in her own home, during FIFA, after the final whistle, and every day.
Need support? You don’t have to face this alone.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, Nisa Foundation is here to provide support, resources, and a safe place to start.
